Description Many people visiting the White suburb of Melrose in northern Johannesburg are surprised to find a quaint wood-and-iron building there. This is the Melrose Hindu Temple built more than three-quarters of a century ago. Over the years there were numerous problems connected with the ownership of the land on which it was built but these problems were eventually overcome. Today it is still used as a place of worship and meditation. It was declared a national monument in 1981. This declaration was a fitting tribute to the early pioneers of the Johannesburg Hindu community.
