Subject — Dullstroom; Suikerboschkop.; 1891
Description In 1883 a company was formed in the Netherlands to buy agricultural land in the Transvaal for the establishment of Dutch farming colonies. As a result in 1884 a number of Dutch families settled on the farms Groot Suikerboschkop and Elandslaagte and established the town of Dullstroom at the foot of Suikerboschkop. Despite serious teething problems the town eventually developed and was granted municipal status in 1891. However, during the Anglo-Boer War it was almost completely destroyed and after the war few of the original inhabitants returned. Although the rebuilt town has almost no essential Dutch character the memory of the pioneers is still honoured.
