Description Preaching and culture. This paper is an attempt to define the relation between culture and preaching. The Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika frequently refers to the church as a 'peoples church' ('volkskerk'). Owing to political changes in South Africa, the qualification 'volkskerk', has created a certain amount of disturbance in the ranks of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk. This study analyses the relation between culture and preaching from different hermeneutical perspectives, namely: the cultural embedding of the biblical kerygma; the interwoveness of language and culture, and the necessity of contextuality in preaching.
