Description An attempt is made to reconstruct the vegetation of the plains, plateaux, mountains and rivers of the .semi-arid to arid western half of the Republic of South Africa as it was before it came under the influence of any type of man other than the Bushman and the Hottentot. Species of plants that were likely to have been important are listed, even if they are rare today. Particular attention is paid to the riverine vegetation. Features of the vegetation and topography that might have influenced the fauna are noted.
