| Description | The philosophical background against which statistics as a science developed, is discussed. The discussion shows that statistics is not isolated from the society within which it is practised and that an understanding of these influences provides insight into statistics. It is also shown that there should be a special relationship between statistics and philosophy since the problems which are considered are closely related. Unfortunately there is little evidence of interaction in practice. Die filosofiese agtergronde waarteen Statistiek as wetenskap ontwikkel het, word bespreek. Dit toon dat Statistiek nie los staan van die samelewing waarbinne dit beoefen word nie en dat begrip van hierdie invloede verhelderend is vir insig in Statistiek. Daar word verder aangetoon dat daar ’n besondere band tussen Statistiek en Filosofie behoort te wees, omdat die probleme wat beskou word, nou verwant is. Ongelukkig kom daar van wisselwerking in die praktyk weinig tereg. | |
