However, an intact immune system is essential for the successful elimination of the pathogen. Several antimicrobial agents inhibit different aspects of the immune system and are best avoided in the treatment of immunesuppressed patients, in children and for long-term therapy. Antimicrobial agents which stimulate the immune system can be used with good effect in these patients. Vir die doeltreffende eliminering van die patogene mikroörganisme is ‘n optimaal funksionerende immuunstelsel nodig. Verskeie antimikrobemiddels inhibeer verskillende elemente van die immuunsisteem en moet verkieslik by immuunonderdrukte pasiënte, by kinders en by langtermynantimikrobeterapie vermy word.
