Description The stress required to reach the breaking point of trabecular bone of the femur neck of patients who obtained a femur neck fracture, was found to be 60% less than that required to reach the same result in patients with hip osteoarthritis. The compression strength of trabecular bone showed a reasonable correlation (r = 0,58) with the relative density of this bone. Analyses of the inclination of the stress-strain curves, and the determination of the elasticity modulus of trabecular bone showed that the bone of the fracture group was 30-60% more elastic than that of the osteoarthritic group. Both strength and elasticity may thus play a role in the evolution of this fracture. Die kompressiesterkte van die trabekulere been toon ’n redelike korrelasie (r = 0,58) met die relatiewe digtheid van die been, ’n Analise van die helling van die spanning-vervormingkurwes en ’n bepaling van die elastisiteitsmodulus van die trabekulere been toon dat pasiente met femurnekfrakture se been 30 - 60% meer elasties is as die van pasiente met heuposteoartrose. Sowel die sterkte as die elastisiteit van die trabekulere been kan dus ’n rol in die evolusie van fermurnekfrakture speel.
