Cell-to-cell adhesion and cell adhesion to the intercellular matrix materials underlie the way in which cells are organised in tissues. Cell-cell interaction through cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) is not only needed to maintain the structural and functional integrity of tissues, but dynamic changes in cell adhesion also participate in tissue growth, development and repair Adhesion mechanisms are furthermore intimately related to cell motility and cell migration, which are essential in the defence processes of the body.
