| Description | A condensed review is presented of the more recent developments in evaluating the salinity and sodicity of water for utilisation in irrigation. Several developments have resulted in water of a higher salinity than previously now being considered suitable for irrigation. The realisation that rain-drop action can result in the formation of surface crusts of low permeability, even at exchangeable sodium percentages lower than that previously considered problematic, point to the possible need for more stringent criteria for irrigation water sodicity. ’n Beknopte oorsig word gegee van jonger ontwikkelings oor die belong van die sout- en natriuminhoud van water vir benutting in besproeiing. Verskeie ontwikkelings het tot gevolg gehad dat water met ’n hoër soutinhoud as vroeër tans as geskik vir besproeiing beskou word. Die besef dat reëndruppelaksie, selfs by laer uitruilbare natriumpersentasies as wat vroeër as problematies beskou is, tot die vorming van oppervlakkorse met ’n lae deurlatendheid vir water lei, dui daarop dat die natriuminhoud van besproeiingswater moontlik strenger beoordeel sal moet word. | |
