Optiese vesel is die enigste transmissiemedium wat potensieel onbeperkte bandwydte het en ook baie hoë datatempo's kan hanteer. The exponential increase in the use of the Internet and the consequent growing need for higher bandwidth demand that the telecommu­nications industry expand the laid networks at a much faster rate. Optical fibre is the only transmission medium that has the potential of unlimited bandwidth and the ability to handle very high data rates.
