Description In the treacherous rapids of scientific tradition and schools scientists are easily thrown off course if they do not involve themselves consciously and creatively with a specific tradition. The author gives a survey of some formulations within the Reformatory philosophical tradition regarding the relationships of Philosophy, subject philosophy and specific scientific disciplines. Through reference to three generations of philosophers within this tradition the unmistakeable meaning of Philosophy for the other disciplines is stressed. Although there is a warning against a philosophy which would so over-estimate itself as to o vet play its hand, Philosophy is still described us the critical conscience of the subject disciplines, and mention is made of the role of subject philosophy which constitutes a bridge enabling two-way traffic to move between Philosophy and subject disciplines.
