Description The main aim of this article is to try to provide further grounds for the argument that Afrikaans cannot be ignored in a future South Africa. Reasons substantiating this claim are inter alia the following: Afrikaans is generally recognized as the language with the largest number of speakers in South Africa; it succeeds in fulfilling both its high and low functions in the South African community: it has validity as a language of science (although much still needs to be done in this regard) and it plays an important role in an inter-disciplinary approach to research and the gaining of knowledge in various fields.
