Description A survey of the research done in literature written specifically for adolescents, shows that remarkably little has been done to analyse the reception and production of such works. Those works, which touch on the suitability of adolescent literature , are rarely based on the principles of a literary-scientific approach. The reasons for this may lie in the fairly abstract nature of any literary work. In this article an attempt is made to find some general guidelines which may be of relevance in the field of young adult reading. Using the works of a popular writer of Afrikaans books for adolescents, Dolf van Niekerk, the article focuses on the unique features of books for young readers, those aspects which distinguish this genre from adult literature, and the factors which make such works more acceptable to teenage readers,
