This article focuses on the particular political determinants which played a major role in the recent language debate concerning Afrikaans. The apparent trends of the debate are interpreted against the background of key concepts such as ideology, hegemony, power and rhetoric and the underlying principles of research paradigms such as Critical Linguistic Study and Language Planning.
