Description Norms of corrupt political elites in Nigeria that portray politics as a ‘dirty game’ and an ideal politician as a corrupt person are shown to negatively affect the participation of Christians in partisan politics in Nigeria. Through the discourse analysis method, the study reflects on some of the factors responsible for political apathy among Christians, as they continue to pose challenges to the political opportunities for Christians. Thus, this study examines complexities surrounding political apathy in the lives of Christians through the lens of a discourse analysis to uncover factors responsible for the phenomenon. Findings suggest that the political culture of the use of violence, pervasive corruption within political systems, negative perception of politics, belief systems and insufficient political education discourage active participation, which undermines the democratic process, leading many Christians to disengage from Nigerian politics. The article explores the roles the Church can play in addressing irregularities, violence and corruption in Nigeria’s electoral process and improving Christian political participation.
Contribution: The study examines the impact of corruption and violence on Christian participation in Nigerian politics and concluded that by addressing these issues through Church involvement, robust anti-corruption measures, electoral reforms, political education, enhanced security and initiatives to foster national unity, Nigeria can begin to build a more transparent, inclusive and good democratic political system.
