Description The zygomycoses are infections caused by fungi of the class zygomycetes, comprised of the orders Mucorales and Entomophthorales. Fungi ofthis order are causes of mucormycosis, an acute opportunistic infection occurring mostly in immunocompromised individuals, particularly in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis. The purpose of this paper is to present an academic perspective on thepathophysiology, presentation and management of mucormycosis. Possible management strategies are provided.
