Description The discourse characteristics of two female patients with dementia are described — one patient with a cortical dementia of Alzheimer's type and one patient with a classical subcortical dementia of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Distinct patterns of breakdown were observed and related to an explanatory model. Implications of the findings for differential diagnosis are discussed and the neurological representation of the pragmatic level of language is considered.
